The GAP between the academic research and Industry application is increasing. The OUTPUT of College is INPUT for Industry. If the professor doing research with out considering real variables of Industry or not considering the internal and External Business environment of an Industry , the research outcomes are not relevant to Industry. If a professor have minimum industrial experience, it will help him to identify real problems and able to do the research to address and provide real time solutions. i suggest a professor must have minimum service in Industry will reduce the GAP between the academia and Industry .
I couldn't agree more, but I spent 2 decades in industry before entering academia. Others will argue that industry experience merely constrains your ability to conduct fundamental research. In fact, during the interview for my first academic position, the Dean of Engineering told me that he thought I had "too much practical experience" to be a successful researcher.... he was wrong.
Academia and practical experiences are complementary to each other . Hands on is a great source of knowledge and normally lasts a lifetime. Not easy to forget and normally easy to teach to others. Academia puts the framework for practical experience in perspective.
