I am working on a project where I need to collect monitoring data from a Cloud platform. I am pretty new at this so I would like to ask what is the better way to work:
1. Setup a cloud like XCP, Eucalyptus or something similar?
2. Use a tool like cloudsim?
In the first case which platform do you recommend (for the cloud infrastructure and for the monitoring)? In the second case do you know any other simulator? Do you think Cloudsim could do the work for me?
In my experience it is easier to perform repeatable and controlled experiments if u use a simulator. Among the different choices, apart from CloudSim, u can take a look at iCanCloud (http://icancloudsim.org/Home.html). The papers they have include comparisons between CloudSim and iCanCloud which may be of interest for u to make a decission.

I forgot to mention that my work has to do also with Cloud Federation and cloudsim supports this scenario.

it all depends on the granularity of the problem you are looking at and the question "you want to ask to your cloud" , plus the side benefit you want to invest your time on.
By the latter, I mean that if you have the time and infrastructure to install, bring up and configure a real cloud stack, then you keep adding up to your skills. Plus you have a setup that will allow you to start realizing problems "closer to reality". And last, you have a setup that can attract fellow researchers to start collaborating with you. In case you decide for this, I recommend a cloud management stack that has traction like openstack or cloudstack. After that, you ll of course have to do something to trigger your cloud to do smth so that you get measurements, in which case you could run some sample workloads (e.g. Hadoop) or use tools to replay traces (e.g. using tools like this: http://hadoop.apache.org/docs/stable/rumen.html).
Another option, when it comes to a metal experimental setup (not simulation), I know that the Greek NREN is operating a cloud. I am though not operating close to you and so have no clue how easy it is to get VMs or cycles at it and at the required authorization level. It may though be free asking :)
