In Europe, the long-predicted second wave of the coronavirus pandemic is now well under way. Several countries are reporting more daily covid-19 cases than they did during the first wave in March, though the higher numbers may be due to more people being tested.
“In some member states, the situation is now even worse than in the peak during March,” said Stella Kyriakides, the European Union’s commissioner for health and food safety, on 24 September. “This is a real cause for concern.”

This news is very sad and worrying, but if rapid mutations of the virus occur, the vaccines developed may not be effective.

In recent days, a record number of positive Covid-19 cases has been observed in Europe. The second wave appears much more violent since it far surpasses the previous peaks of the first.

Greece to unveil one-month plan of 'targeted restrictions' to curb second wave
Greece will introduce further restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19, the prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday, as further lockdowns were imposed in the country’s northern and central regions.
Greece has recorded significantly lower numbers of Covid-19 than other countries in Europe but cases have been rising rapidly since early October. Testing has also increased.
On Wednesday, the country registered 1,547 new Covid-19 cases, its highest daily tally, bringing its total number of infections to 34,299 so far. A total of 603 patients have died, authorities said.
