Reduction of thermal stability for composite membrane when using amine-functionalized filler. Is it due to the lower decomposition temperature of amine functional group? or the functionalization weaken any bond in the chemical structure?
Yes, the moieties attached to the filler may reduce the thermal stability. On the other hand, if the cross linking occurs between filler and polymer, the thermal stability will be higher. Please kindly have a look at this paper where titanate nanotubes filler improve the thermal stability of the polyimide composites.

Yes the functional groups attached to the filler can make a difference in overall composite thermal stability. What is your matrix? It better to find fillers with functional groups that can chemically react with the matrix. This way it can increase the cross-linking density and in turn increase the thermal stability.
