For a paper I want to apply Framing and Crisis Communication to a given case. Now, after having written the literature review, I stumbled upon quite some literature connecting Framing to the theory of Social Movements (e.g. "Framing Processes and Social Movements: An Overview and Assessment"). As I am already caught between several theoretical twists and doubts, would it be negligent to not mention the link between Framing and Social Movements?
In general, your literature review covers the literature that is relevant to your research question. Often, this will draw on portions of a much larger literature, much of which is not relevant to your research question, and can thus be ignored.
It is certainly my impression that the concept of framing is well known in the field of communication, so you should not need to go into its use outside that field.
I'm not sure because I don't have enough information ("applying Framing and Crisis communication to a case" doesn't tell me much). However, I don't think you must engage with the SM literature on framing. You are will have traced Framing back to Goffman, to whom we ascribe the generic concept. I can't say from the top of my head whether Goffman already considered collective frames but there were others outside SM doing that.
I wonder, however, if it would not be wise to put in a footnote mentioning framing in SM as something different and thus not to be engaged with. Many researchers (including reviewers) associate framing with SM and would thus expect this to come up, and would be disappointed if it does not.
