A polymer chain is a concatenated sequence of monomers. It pervades spatial dimensions on the size scale of tens of nanometers. A polymer chain is built-up from hundreds to many hundreds of thousands of monomer units. Polymer chains are fractal objects whose dimensionality is determined by interactions between the monomeric units and solvent molecules. Through molecular imaging, one can measure both the persistence length and the fractal dimension of single molecules in various environments.

The kinetic chain length of a polymer is the average number of monomers added to a growing chain during chain-growth.

The contour length of a polymer chain is its length at maximum physically possible extension. Contour length is equal to the product of the number of segments of polymer molecule(n) and its length. The chain contour length is obtained by dividing the Molar Weight of a polymer by the Molar weight of its monomer unit and multiplying this ratio with the length of the monomer unit.
