Strictly in botanical terms, this refers to the process by which an unfertilized egg cell develops directly into an embryo, and is also known as a case of parthenogenesis. In this case, if a seed develops, the embryo in the seed is of maternal origin only, with no genetic material from the parent.
Parthenogenesis occurs in both plants and animals. Some of the examples where parthenocarpy includes watermelon, pineapple, banana, guava, grapes, tomato, apple, papaya, etc. Examples for parthenogenesis include plants such as Nicotiana, Datum, Solanum nigrum, etc. and animals like Armeniaca, Drones, Lacerta, and Typhlina.
