There is massive literature and heaps of videos discussions about AI (I do not wish to mention such day-dreaming examples) of without having any real concept of understanding about the reality of AI. I think it is mainly due to the exaggerated nomenclature, that is AI for ONA.
Or more explicitly: "Optimal Numerical Approximation (ONA) is exaggeratedly percepted by Artificial Intelligence (AI)"?
TO me, Optimal Numerical approximation of physical real world transformed via digital tools is AI.

I would rephrase the statement:
"Optimal Numerical approximation of physical real world transformed via digital tools is AI."
Since it can be taken that you are delimiting AI as just Optimal Numerical approximation and standard definitions of AI deal with a broader classification of AI(such as including NLP, vision system, robotics, etc).
It is true as you say, that due to the hype of machine learning there are unrealistic expectations, but I do not think it is because of nomenclature. My take is that most of the hype comes from not learning about statistical learning theory and approximation theory.
