Society has always benefitted from a diverse curriculum. Thirty years ago in my home state of Victoria, Australia, the science curriculum document gave the following advice to teachers and schools:

… Knowledge of high value to one group or purpose may have little value to another, but there is some knowledge which is trivial on almost all accounts.

… there is not a single “best” answer, relevant to all Victorian schools, to the question of what knowledge is of most worth, and the list that might be compiled by a Statewide consensus would be too large.

Given that the science curriculum can only address a sample of worthwhile content, it is important that the sample be allowed to vary from school to school. This has advantages to the State because it broadens and strengthens our scientific resource: we are not confronted with an entire generation with the same “gaps” in their competence. It has advantages in that it recognises variations in the educational needs of different communities and enables schools to design curricula according to local needs and available resources …

I believe we need a mixture of the traditional direct instruction and student centred learning; there will be groups of students who learn best either way. There are positive aspects of most teaching/learning styles. Interesting, at my school, is that traditional teaching has been more successful initially with student centred learning occurring after working knowledge is established. Traditional teaching styles are fit for every generation. In response to Dorothy Smith's reply, the science curriculum advice of 30 years ago is still pertinent.

Let's accept changing in curiculuum. Through experience. Better looking at an incomplete CV than someone else's beautiful CV. Teaching how to do a CV is killing creativity. Everybody's different.

This fits the teacher-manager approach and the transition of schools to contemporary learning organizations. Teachers and schools need room for flexibility, initiative and autonomy. Therefore, curricula should be diversified and not strict or restricting.

Dear Kopila. This is a great question. A change in the curriculum should be carefully studied by collecting multi-source data about problems in the current curriculum and what type of curriculum can be used and will help in solving the issues you are facing. A curriculum should prepare students to the next stage they are going to. A change in the curriculum needs support from the school and the department and should focus on student's learning, application of knowledge and development of skills rather than focus on factual knowledge and memorisation. The matter needs a lot of preparation and training of teachers and preparation of material to be used. Support is vital for the success of the change.

I think, even before the new generation, we already have a diversed curriculum. It is upon the discretion of the curriculum implementers (teacher/s) on how are they going to transfer it to our learners so we can adapt on the changes of our society.

I agree. This is indisputable. However, diversifying curriculum demands teachers of enough ability to know what the subject basically is by nature, which should be something commonly followed by all teachers, and what and how to select necessary content and teaching strategies and measures. Teacher monitoring and academic support is very necessary.
