Indigenous knowledge is now recognized as an essential component of development. Going beyond the rhetoric, how can we mainstream this body of knowledge in development theory and practice?
One way is to show the validity of indigenous knowledge in a way that scientists and policy makers can understand (usually some kind of structured evaluation) and then conduct pilot studies of showing how this knowledge is still valid in spite of changing economic, social and ecological conditions.
To incorporate local knowledge into development processes must start by valuing, rescue and spread. Once this process has been developed for knowledge management must take to be part of innovation processes. where individuals and societies express their creativity, their needs and desires. The history, culture, education, institutional political organization and economic structure of each society determine, ultimately, its ability to generate and accept the news. Local knowledge plays a key role in the territories, eg is a mechanism for conserving and using agrobiodiversity. Knowing that farmers possess the natural environment and their production systems enables them to cope better under adverse, environmental or market conditions, and achieve their production targets. This cognitive ability and motor adaptation is based on the multifunctionality of small farms, characteristic related to the conservation of natural resources and increased efficiency and productivity. Thus, peasant farms that combine multiple strategies to ensure income, usually based on their knowledge of their environment farmers develop.
Special thanks to everybody! I agree that the starting point would be to devise means of validating relevant local knowledge systems. Beyond that, finding appropriate reward systems for intellectual property rights would legitimize and rightfully compensate the custodians of local or indigenous knowledge infrastructure for their contributions to the development process. More importantly, establishing relevant departments or special centers in citadels of learning - where modalities for incorporating local knowledge into the mainstream - will provide an ideal platform for driving the entire process.
