If convenience sampling is done by distributing questionnaire among students of a university on social media groups, can Mann Whitney test be used for Likert type analysis of sub-samples of male and female choices? I am doubtful because one of the assumptions of the Mann Whintey test is that the samples are random.

, unless I am badly mistaken, the Mann-Whitney test does NOT require samples to have been randomly selected. Therefore, I think your not having random samples should not preclude you using that test. Go for it!
