The old Apple iPod used a Firewire AC adapter with an output of 12.5 VDC at 0.64 A. There is a picture of the adapter at the following URL: https://www.ebay.com/itm/273744495915 By the way, you mean a Leica DFC290 HD not a DCF290 HD. If you click on the photo, you will be able to see the FireWire logo on the cable plugged into the adapter.

Finding a way to power the camera is the least of your woes.

Finding a way to sensibly convert FireWire comms to something that you've got a driver for over USB is the big problem.

But your software is now going to be asked to look at a serial port - and can it (or will it?) be happy to do so?

I'd just buy a 2nd hand;

a) PC with a Firewire card

b) Appropriate Mac from the right era

If you have a robust (tested) way to get data flowing, splicing in a 12VDC supply is a matter of minutes.

I may have read the question incorrectly, but I thought that Lucas Jennings just wanted to power the camera. The camera has a separate HDMI connector for outputting video.

Ah - my mistake - thank you Thomas.

In which case Lucas simply needs to bare the FireWire cable, identify the power lines and solder in a suitably fused 12V supply - making sure that the 0V rail is not tied to ground (as there may be multiple 'grounds' at play here).

Far simpler than faffing with drivers!

You'll need to breach the shield to get at the wires in the cable.

So be it.

Once you've found the right lines, scrape off the insulation to bare the wires, wrap around each wire a length of well-fluxed 24 awg (at least) wire, solder in place, and then 'blob' the joints with Shoe-Goo (I kid you not - it's tough, somewhat pliable, and insulating) or similar.

Take the two flying wires to a trusted PSU, and make sure that it's not grounded. You could even hook it up to a 12V battery (fused) temporarily.

I've had issues in the past with multiple '0V' rails and ground all getting hot and bothered.
