Hi, all,
I am redesigning my sociocultural foundations class to focus a lot more on curriculum and assessment, and therefore need to find shorter readings to use to ground the conversation. I haven't taught this class in six years, so need some pointers on what's new and great. What I am looking for:
1. a reading that covers the major views about diversity. I'm using Banks's model as one reading, but want something more recent.
2. Have a great reading from Gee about sociocultural foundations and assessment, but need something that situates sociocultural theories about ed within larger ed debates.
3. Some really good readings about the socially constructed nature of culture that also includes some history about the concept. I plan on introducing students to the concept of the subaltern, but they need much more scaffolding than they've had.

Dear Rebecca,
I would urgue you to read some of Lev Vygotsky's work on his socio-cultural theory, namely to be acquainted with his idea of zone of proximal development. The idea of a socially constructed nature of culture is a key idea in Vygotsky's classical work. He also remarked that through others, we become ourselves. You can also proffit a lot from Jerome Bruner's book called "The process of instruction"

Thanks! I was planning on doing some Vygotsky so they have that foundations. My only concern about Vygotsy is that ZPD is the only thing students seem to remember. I'll have to think through how to get them to dig into his theoretical work more effectively.
Bruner's work is a great idea, too! I'll dig up my copy of The Process of Instruction, and Education and Culture as well.
To be honest, the "classics" aren't the problem. I am looking for feedback on more recent pieces (post-NCLB) to use.
