There was at least one publication (on satellite-measured AOD validation using AERONET, I think) where AOD data were correlated with data from the following hours (days?) and/or with data from spatially neighboring measurement sites or pixels. I remember that from the autocorrelation the authors derived their collocation criteria, but I cannot remember the numbers, nor in which paper the study appeared. Does anyone know which I mean? And are there other studies of this type, either with aerosols or trace gases?

Not quite as directly related, but there is a model-based analysis of aerosol correlation length scales in Zhang et al. (below), and a discussion of comparison at different length scales (similar to what is in Breon et al.) in the Appendix to Hyer et al. (below). Good luck!

If you want to apply the Spatial auto-correlation for your AOD product, please follow the attached paper.
I know there is a relatively related project conducted on dust storms of west Asian region by UNEP. however, for autocorrelation you need to use emprical field methods to get the values.
Edward and Dipanjan: thanks a lot for your good suggestions! We are doing a study on biomass burning emissions (trace gases and aerosols) and are trying to decide on what scale these need to be performed to ensure good enough statistics and signal-to-noise ratio without sacrificing too much temporal and spatial variability.
Seeking out Edward's JGR paper caused me to stumble over several other interesting papers on the subject of BB emissions - so thanks once more for that reference!
