This question is about calculation of impact of research paper on the basis of citation appear. Although it is noticed that many research articles, have too many citation and showing impact due to those citation but practically there is no significance of those article to society. Is this a right way to calculate impact of research on the basis of citation rather than its significance to society or it should be based on significance of research to society.
Discovery of first antibiotic Penicillin was published by A. Fleming in some very ordinary journal of that time.
Work is far far more important than name of the publishing journal, IF, number of citation etc. etc.
Significance to society means. Society is getting benefit from research in term of it applicability. As we are commonly applying newton's law.
I agree that Impact on society should be one of the criterion to judge a paper in lieu of citation only.Many such examples are there where papers are really impacting the grass root level farmers published in local languages but not cited in research papers.

Some researches are purely of academic value and some are beneficial to the society as well. The latter type should be encouraged more and more than those published in high impact factor journals but mostly of academic value.

I think that the significance of any research for the society was more important than the basis of citations.
