Direct freezing has been reported to significantly decrease survival in benthic diatoms (vegetative cells). However, some species are known to survive this stress. Therefore, the tolerance is species-specific. In addition, tolerance of temperature stress is habitat-specific, for instance, some terrestrial species of diatoms can survive freezing in comparison to their aquatic counterparts.
