As we know for microalgae, ammonia( form of N) is more preferred than nitrate(form of N) due to less energy requirement, but different species of same genus prefer nitrate more. Is there a general trend among freshwater or saline species too? Can anybody suggest with reference articles, whether marine or freshwater sp. particularly utilise the nitrate or ammonia as a source of nitrate?
