Usually, polymers are used to modify the asphalt to have more durability for ageing. Polymer modified asphalt is a wide study and you need to look for the more effective ones to reduce the ageing effect.
Also, modifiers such as LDH can be used to reduce the effect of sunlight (UV ageing) on the binder. There are multiple studies shows its effect.
Now days, two types of polymers are used for modification of bitumen as such elastomer [SBS], plastomer [PE].
When the polymer mix with bitumen, the some of lighter oils are absorbed and expanded to surround the larger asphalt particles. Then, "phase inversion" will be occurred. The network of polymer with asphalt provides the elasticity and prevention of permanent deformation for higher temperature. That's why; low temperature crack resistance will be increased. The plastomer is a tough and low elastic response which has low resistance of deformation of asphalt. But, elastomer has high elastic response which provides high recovery and better resistance of deformation. That’s why; plastomer can be used to improve the strength of asphalt but not elastic recovery.
