I am planning to develop an IR thermal camera based surveillance bot to detect human motion in outdoor. However, I am a bit confused that if i apply the same for image processing during daytime and night, will it work for both cases?
Any information regarding this issue will be highly appreciated
It would be a bit hard to use IR thermal based image processing during daylight since the difference between target (human) and its background will be low. Hence, strict filtering needs to be applied.
IR is meant for low light conditions especially for night vision ... The temperature in sunlight is also high e.g: Corelated color temperature (CCT) is a measure for reflectance .

So, to make a system detect human both in daytime and night, I need to use two individual cameras (one normal, other IR thermal camera) for daytime and night?
No , you can do cost cutting by using wide spectrum cameras that have a spectral response from VIS (visible) to NIR say 380nm to 1000nm and then either use an IR sources or check if they have it in the camera. These days you get such cameras . Infact the commercial CCD (Silicon based) has IR-cut filter , if you remove that (it is quite a lot of work to be done carefully) then you can use it as IR camera too . Again, if you want temperature information then you have to buy the software along with the camera ...

I guess it's possible if the human is a moving object. But effective image processing algorithm is required since the difference between human and background temperature won't be as much high as night

You can use infra red camera to track peoples night and days provided that the camera has an optical filter that filters out the visible an uv light. Also if the optical sensor is responsible only for the infrared radiation. If you build the camera by your self you have to take the response of the camera to other light rather than the infrared radiation other wise the camera will be overloaded by the day light.
