If a project would be added from the institutional profile, we would have a direct link (project-institution). Then, we would add the publications linked to the project and authored by the researchers affiliated to that institution.
At the moment, the projects are directly linked to the researcher profile and their publications (the institution is linked to the projects only through the researcher profile).
According to https://explore.researchgate.net/display/support/Getting+started, "ResearchGate is the professional network for scientists and researchers", i.e. not for institutions. Frankly, I don't see the problem.
On RG there are several institutions that have registered their profile.
Therefore, if the university that pays you your salary agrees, you can register it and, consequently, manage publications, projects, etc.
Gioacchino de Candia, I'm not sure if there are institutional profiles created. I think they have been automatically registered once the affiliations were completed (for the first time on the platform) and saved in the researcher profiles.
I can see some of the researchers are engaged in RG from non-educational institutions.

Among other things, I am not aware that the institutions are complaining about this.
So, it can be done.
