Is it important to one-hot encode data before training with convolutional neural networks?

Lets say the data is in a form of text.

I'm looking for ways or representation that can be used before throwing my data to a convolutional neural network.

It is unusual (and also strange) to use convolutional NN with categorical inputs. convolutional are usually feed with images (or videos) and try to extract patterns from the data.
