to me it seems like you have a classification problem here. Machine Learning is very powerful for classification problems and i think you can use some classic approaches like the Support Vector Machine or kNN method. If you need to understand the basic principles of ML you can have a look at your University course "AI in Automotive Technology" and check out the first lecture. Then you will get an idea of where and how you can use ML
