In what ways can the electromagnetic fields around the highly power rated devices in a substation can trigger faults in a substation or simply power system. It will be a bit more useful if someone can highlight on such faulty conditions due to undesirable electromagnetic field.

You at ABB must be working with High Voltage Motor Drives or similar fields. Also, the HT lines in a power substation might be in your focus. I have some prior experience in handling noise and faults caused in PLCs and other low voltage microcontroller based circuits simply in the vicinity of a large motor. By vicinity does not mean close proximity of few tens of centimeter but several feet away from such a large motor.
So, the situation was that the HV spikes riding on the AC supply were coupled on the LVDC power supply thereby causing RESET to the microcontroller circuit and the PLC. We applied some RFI filters and Mild-Steel (MS) enclosure as shielding and the problem could be reduced within acceptable limits.
Therefore, such spikes due to the switching of SCRs, can cause faults in neighborhood systems because of conducted or radiated EMI. Hope this sheds some light to your problem. Please feel free to discuss any further.

I hope this is really helpful. Thank you, Are there any electrical parameter in a substation changing due to this EMI interaction . I was basically concerned about how the electrical faults may be triggered due to such effects but whatever you have discussed is also of very nice way of looking at the scenario.
