In teaching engineering subjects, what is your experience of dealing with students struggling with the maths? Do you feel the need to adjust your teaching material? or do you just ignore them? What advice would you give them?
In any subject where students are struggling, the professor should make adjustments in their method of teaching in order to reach all learners. At no point, will I ignore students’ who are struggling. Perhaps the following publications will assist you in some strategies for differentiated instruction.
I agree with you, but some people just never see eye to eye with maths. But can change. I used to hate maths when I was a kid because the maths teacher made me hate the subject with his negative comments. But later on, when I had a teacher who kept praising me for the smallest effort, I gradually started liking the subject. Now I LOVE maths. This is essentially our mission, I guess, share and translate our enthusiasm to students, show them we are passionate, and often they will walk with us.
Thank you Martha. Indeed, a lot has been written about the subject. As I said to Constantinos, in my many years of lecturing, I found that when students see you are passionate about the subject and you make every effort to share that passion and enthusiasm with them, you have more chances of succeeding. Nevertheless, there are always those students who are simply switch off.... reaching to them is what concerns me.
