Bit Error Ratio (BER) is an important factor when it comes to setting up a communication link whether it be optical or wireless. I would like to know if there is a way to calculate it in a Spatial/Mode division multiplexed optical fiber system. Any paper or article for reference will also be highly appreciated.
The BER is influenced by SNR (to which a higher crosstalk would contribute), but this only one part of the story. There are other factors as well. Have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bit_error_rate to get a feeling.
In principle one should be able to calculate the BER, but this requires a lot of data. And the result depends on the quality (aka reliability) of the data. Thus the traditional approach is to have a rough estimate of the BER to be expected and - - - measure.

BER dependence strongly on SNR. therefore, you need to know the parameters that affect SNR then you can calculate it.
