Managers should consider corporate social responsibility as part of strategy of creating loyal customers and maintaining existing ones. If a coy take social responsibility serious especially on matters that affect the community, customers will remain loyal and they are likely to use word of mouth as an ad which is an effective way where new customers are created and converted to loyal customers. When customers are created, it is necessary to scale-up output which is an increase of performance inform of increase of profits.

To measure CSR you have the choice between

Indicator variable, in the case of a CSR label

Continuous variable: if you have expenditure data to obtain a CSR label

Continuous variable: if you want to use measurement scales in a questionnaire where CSR is a construct (formative or reflexive) and its dimensions are: the improvement of the working conditions, the protection of the environment, the commitment to partners

To measure economic performance

Either: ROE (net income / equity) ROA (operating result * (1-tax rate) / economic asset)

But preferably: EVA (ROA - cost of permanent capital employed)

To control changes in economic performance

Indicator variables for activity sectors

Financial leverage (net financial debt / equity)

Risk: standard deviation of the share price or change in the operating result in relation to the turnover

Dividend policy: dividends / net income

Size: log of assets or number of employees

Growth: turnover rate of change

Investssements: expenditure on investment / turnover

Changes in capital: indicator variable if there is a capital increase or a capital reduction

Capital Structure: Concentration of capital (herfindahl index of the 5 largest shareholders); indicator variable if the largest shareholder is a family, is an institutional investor

Governance: proportion of independent directors on the board of directors; size of the board of directors (log of the number of directors); separation of decision and control functions: variabe indicator if there is a chairman of the board and a director general

Be careful if you use econometric modeling some exogenous variables are also endogenous and you have to use instrumental variable regression. The supposedly endogenous variables are: CSR and the characteristics of governance

Measure key sustainability focused on areas like policies, management systems and performance

Sustainability development programs that help maintain social license to operate

Operational improvements and efficiencies executed to reduce the company's footprint in negative areas like pollution

Measure sustainability performance ratio I.e. what helps safeguard the company's ability to place product into the global marketplace

Measure Ways the company is helping/ adding value to advance the engagement with its community, globally, social media, and or locally. Measure it's investments in educating its consumers, customers, measure its contribution to the social media crowd space and its communication dynamics/ responses. Conduct surveys within and / or outside the organization to gain more insight
