Subject: invitation to participate in research about the role of English in academic publishing

Dear colleagues,

I am a doctoral student in the field of education at the University of Exeter (UK). The title of my study is  “English Medium for Publication: Opening or Closing Doors to Scientific Discourse." It seeks to investigate the perceptions and practices of non native English (NNES) scholars on the usage of English as a Medium of Publication. It focuses on their attitudes towards English usage, looks at their linguistic competencies, explores the positive and/or negative experiences they have encountered while writing for publication and examines the role academic gatekeepers (editors and reviewers) play in the publication process.

Your professional experience and personal engagement will provide a highly valuable contribution to my research in understanding the role of English in academic publishing. I would greatly appreciate your participation and support of this project. The results of this research will be presented as part of my doctoral dissertation.

Your contribution only requires the completion of an informed consent form and about 30-40 minutes of your time for an in depth personal interview. The interview will be conducted in English (or Arabic, my native language) via Skype. I can also email the questions for you to answer before the interview, if desired, upon request.

To be eligible for the current study, researchers must all come from non-Anglophone countries and must have done some publications in English in the natural and/or in the social sciences disciplines.  The academic brokers (reviewers and editors), on the other hand, can be native or non-native English speakers; nonetheless, they need to have done some reviewing in English.

If you find yourself eligible and agree to participate in this study, you may rest assured that your privacy will be protected at all times. Your participation in this study is absolutely voluntary and your responses will be kept confidential and anonymous.

I thank you for your time and consideration. Please contact me at [email protected] (or send an email to my ResearchGate account) if you would like to participate, or with any questions or concerns you may have. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Randa Sibahi
