Please follow the ASTM E647-15 or similar recommendations in another ASTM standards - you can take it from MIT - website http://web.mit.edu/3.35/www/Lecture_notes/fracture-toughness.pdf. I hope that it will be usefull. Generally, the initial value of the maximum fatigue load should

be less than Pf. In my opinion the DK-control loading (R=0.1) is suitable, however the desired "precrack" depends on the main specimen dimensions. You may check all conditions in mentioned standards.

My apologies but I beg to differ from the previous answer by Dr. Lesiuk. You wish to measure the fracture toughness of your die steel material, but he suggested that you look at ASTM Standard E647-15, which is of course the ASTM standard for the measurement of fatigue crack growth rates. You will need to precrack your sample, yes, but the document that you really need to follow is ASTM E1820-15 which is the ASTM Standard Test Method for Measurement of Fracture Toughness. You may be able to download a copy online but your library should have a copy.

As your material is quite hard, unless you only have very small samples, you will probably need to follow the Linear-elastic Fracture Mechanics mode of measurement to determine KIc, rather than use the far more complex Nonlinear-elastic Fracture Mechanics approach.

Yes, it is true.I am not sure that, I good understand the intention of dr Shinde. I have tried to answer about the pre cracking procedure.

1) Precracking procedure - is well described in all mentioned standards (i.e. ASTM E647, E1820, E399 etc.)

If it comes about the fracture toughness,

2) Fracture toughness - definitely ASTM E399 - KIC - test. I have successfully tested this steel using ASTM E399 fracture toughness measurement standard.
