Are you chemists or biologists using any type of immobilizing apparatus to hold a watch glass? I know there are stuff to hold round bottomed flasks, but watch glass has a large radius of curvature. Any comments about using a different approach would also be helpful, thanks!

Hot plate have an electric heater coil. The coil have flat cover, over which the materials to be heated may be placed and bottom and sides are provided with insulating materials. Normally the heat flux at the top surface will not be uniform.
For scientific activities, if you need an uniform heat flux, try with a thick sheet of good heat conductor, like Copper plate, over the hot plate.
The uniformity of temperature over the surface may be checked with a IR thermometer. Try to get the temperature uniformity data starting from low temperature to high temperature. Try to take IR image with an interval of at least 5 minutes.
If you want to avoid the air gap between the hot plate and the Copper sheet, you may think of Silver paste.

I think most of the heating equipment is designed for a particular application (i.e. heating chemical-ware) and this makes things harder to figure out for an unconventional heating application.
If you are planning to have high temperatures for your experiments, I suggest you to use Quartz glass-wares.
