In my point of view in the field of catalysis novelty should waste approaches that I call statistical work. At this kind of "statistical work" you just test several material against its catalytic activity and try doing some correlations between them without understanting how is the mechanism of the reation and waht are the features that really affect your catalaytic behavior. At the end you just can say that the material X had better activity and some dubious reasons for it.
In catalysis you can make good and novel work in understanding the mechanisms of the reactions, what are the properties from the catalyst that really affect your system, you can make some operando analysis where you analyse what is happening with your catalyst and with the reaction while it is happening.
By the end it thing that novelty is related to how deep you go inside a problem in way to understand what is hidden and had not been discovered before.
