You need a 'thing', a controller, a state machine, something, to read the value of your verilog registers at times, put them in RS232 or UART messages, and sent them out on the UART. The simplest is to do this in Verilog: eg every 10 ms, read some regsters, write them in bytes to the RS232, and the RS232 will then transmit to the PC.

There is another solution.

- Use an SPI interface on the FPGA.

- Use an FTDI chip to connect the the PC. The FTDI converts USB to SPI.

- SPI has longer messages. First sent out one byte, defining what to read, then read back some info.

- You can then do an interface in the FPGA that sents out a Verilog register depending on the value of the first SPI byte.

You can use the RS232 port or even the ethernet port. Regardless, you will need a communication wrapper like other users mentioned. This would most likely be a simple FSM. You can also make this microprocessor-based, i.e., you map your verilog registers to memory, use the CPU to read them out at whatever interval, and also use the CPU to send them out of the board. This would probably be the most flexible solution for the hardware.

On the PC side you will need to 'listen' for the incoming data. Something like hyperterminal could be used. I would advise to first save the data to a file, and later do the processing with matlab. Making everything one big online system is more complicated but doable with tools like Labview.
