Distinguishing between sibling animals like golden retriever puppies requires models that go beyond generic object recognition. Techniques like Siamese networks, which learn similarity scores rather than categories, are highly effective for such fine-grained tasks. In my work on “Retinal Twins”, we used Siamese networks to capture subtle asymmetries in retinal images—similar to distinguishing near-identical features in animals. This approach, when adapted with domain-specific cues (e.g., fur pattern, ear shape), could enhance animal re-identification performance significantly.

To push computer vision models to the point where they can tell apart two golden retriever puppy siblings, you’d need to start with high-resolution image datasets meticulously labeled to capture individual differences, zeroing in on subtle cues like facial bone structure, unique fur patterns, and eye contours. Employing fine-grained recognition methods, such as deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or transformer-based architectures like Vision Transformers (ViTs), trained with contrastive learning frameworks (e.g., SimCLR or CLIP), can enable the model to pick up on these minute distinctions. Data augmentation—varying lighting conditions, camera angles, and poses—helps the model generalize better. Fine-tuning pretrained models on datasets tailored to the specific siblings, combined with techniques like attention mechanisms or facial landmark detection, sharpens the model’s focus on critical differentiating features.

Great insights on contrastive learning and ViT-based enhancements. I completely agree that ultra-fine distinctions require high-res data and attention-driven architectures. In our “Retinal Twins” study, we dealt with a similar challenge—discriminating between nearly symmetric retinal images from the same subject. While we used Siamese networks, we also explored inter-ocular asymmetry cues and learned attention alignment, which might parallel domain-specific differences like fur texture gradients or micro-expressions in animal faces.
