How to improve the rates of deceased donor organ donation in Turkey? I suggest that this requires an investment of both time and resources at a number of levels.
First in the hospitals you need to invest in the intensive care unit sector by appointing both nurses and doctors who have the requisite knowledge and skills pertaining to organ donation. This article summarises the current knowledge pertaining to organ donation and the intensive care units-
They need to be supported by a central organization which acts as the coordinating body and is also responsible for the governance as well as the reporting mechanisms.
Finally there needs to be an ongoing investment into community education, advocacy and media relations. This can be co-ordinated via a central organization.
A number of countries have recognised this for eg the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and Spain.
I believe that the best effect was if over the Turkish government managed to pass a law, where all the residents of Turkey were potential donors! Only those who state that they do not want to be removed from the list! Turkey is a large and populous country, and I think it has enormous potential organ donors and this would be the largest part of the population was covered and normally would enormously increase the number of potential donors!
Cultural, religious believes and societal myths or perceptions regarding life after death and the importance of having intact bodies in the after life are great limitations to autopsies, cadaverivc organ donation and even cremation. To overcome these limitation, educating first the traditional and religious leaders (who would go on to teach their followers) of the benefits in this world of giving, and donations and more importantly the effets of this simple gesture on fellow humans would go along way to change or reorientate existing believe systems. Secondly the country needs to make laws that either make it compulsory to donate or create tax benefits for those who enrol to donate their organs postmortem
