We are planning to sample crustaceans from intertidal area during low tides using transects. We want to catch all within the transects. However it's difficult to catch them because they can escape very fast. Is there a method to catch crustaceans easily? We have tried to use clove oil as an aenesthetic but it doesn't seem to be effective. Maybe there are other aenesthetics we can use. Any suggestions are welcome.
Try using Tobacco oil and Menthol crystals dissolved in seawater & then apply on them, separately.

If you have to do with larger crustaceans can try some elecric power shock like electric angling of fish. May be the same el. fishing shockers can be used, try even normal shocker against rowdy!
For ciliophora we are using higher than natural salt concentration. After that the animals get out from the ground following the gradient esp if you have to do with interstitial psammon biotopes. For ciliates it is possible to gather clear samples for silver impregnation.
For small crustaceans can be like a method of obtaining the total amount from hardly studied bottom deposits. Try it if your crustacea are small - about 0,5-1 mm. Right conc. should find experimentally.
