I am reading one journal article [Author x]. After reading i want to use that sentence in my own way. I want to give citation of that paper. If the author x of the article not cited any and used his own words means i can cite his reference. In other way, the author x wrote that line from some other sources {Author y] and gave citation of Author y. In that case Do i need to give citation for Author x or Author y or both.
It is always better to cite from the original source. However, when the article of [Author x] is not available to you, you may indicate the original source [article by Author x], and add "cited after [article by Author y]". So, indicate both sources.
You should cite that original author's article rather than the secondary one
I asked this question because some authors cited 1960 to 2000 references in recent article. Most of them prefer newer reference.
I would not recommend to cite the secondary source just because it is a newer one. This would be bad scientific style. Important sources can be cited even after decades.
