Your answer will, of course, depend on what you take 'fit for purpose' to mean. So, I'm also interested in what you think the real purpose of academic writing is - other than to allow authors to demonstrate to readers that they are familiar with other work in their fields (and perhaps even to demonstrate that the work cited relates in some way to the ideas, hypotheses, arguments or viewpoints research they are writing about - how much citation actually does that?).
