There has been multiple research into the selection of weak buses/pilot points in a power system. However, I am yet to come across a paper indicating how many weak buses should be selected for voltage control. For example, in an IEEE 30 bus system, I can rank the buses according to their sensitivities but how many should I select for voltage control. What is the right amount of buses to select for the placement of a compensation device. Thank you

I think there is no specific number of "weak" buses which you should consider, this varies from system to system and it also depends on the (reactive power) rating of your compensation device and on the location of these buses within the system. For example, if you have a weak bus at the end of the system, its upstream neighbor is likely also a weak bus. Nevertheless it would not make sense to have compensation device at both of these buses.
There are publications for selection of optimal number of compensation devices and their locations. Further papers are available for optimal number and location using more than one type of compensation devices.
These papers will indicate the optimal number of weak buses for the purpose of providing compensation
