I read once that Earth is slowly losing its atmosphere into the interstellar space, the estimate for a critical date being 300 000 years. Can anybody give a reference or an answer?

On the face of it, 300'000 years seems very short. If air is leaking at such a rate, the atmosphere in earlier times must have been unbelievably dense, thinking that the earth has been around for about 10'000 times longer than the mentioned 300'000 years. Estimating it or calculating it is not quite trivial, tough.
