How effective are waste-to-energy policies in developing countries, particularly in the face of limited infrastructure and low levels of community participation?
In Sri Lanka, we have only one waste to energy plant which was established recently in Colombo. The waste-to-energy (WTE) policies in Sri Lanka have shown mixed effectiveness. While they offer potential solutions to waste management challenges and energy needs, implementation faces significant obstacles.
In Sri Lanka specifically, WTE initiatives have struggled with:
Insufficient waste separation and collection infrastructure
High moisture content in municipal waste, reducing incineration efficiency
Financial constraints limiting technology adoption and maintenance
Governance challenges and policy inconsistency
Technical capacity gaps in operation and maintenance
