When doping in case of semiconductor is concerned, we doped Si by trivalent or pentavalent impurity atoms to improve its electronic properties but in case of nano-particles, sometimes we doped them with impurity atoms having same valency like mg doped ZnO.. So how this doping affect the electronic band structure?
Moreover what are the main effects of valency on doped nano-particles?

Hello Krishna,
in your example (Mg in ZnO), you have different possibilities. The electronic effect depends on the lattice site where Mg is built in:
- If Mg substitutes Zn, the effect is expected to be electronic neutral. Zn and Mg have the same number of valence electrons.
- If Mg substitutes O, you have a difference of 4 electrons. This would give a p-type.
- An interstitial atom can have different effects, but normally, such atoms give deep energy levels which are electrically inactive (not ionized), but optically effect as recombination enters or disturbe the crystal structure.
Of course, this pure valence electron calculation only gives a rough estimation. Nevertheless, it is not due to nanostructuring but the more complex chemical structure than Si.
