I've tried to load vmd as per installation guide but getting the following error:

[root@j3-aib-lab1-01 vmd-1.9.1]# ./configure
using configure.options: LINUXAMD64 OPENGL FLTK TK ACTC CUDA IMD LIBSBALL XINERAMA XINPUT LIBTACHYON VRPN NETCDF TCL PYTHON PTHREADS NUMPY SILENT ICC
[root@j3-aib-lab1-01 vmd-1.9.1]#
[root@j3-aib-lab1-01 vmd-1.9.1]# cd ./src
[root@j3-aib-lab1-01 src]# make install
Make sure /usr/local/bin/vmd is in your path.
VMD installation complete. Enjoy!
[root@j3-aib-lab1-01 src]# vmd
bash: vmd: command not found
[root@j3-aib-lab1-01 src]#
plz help me out to install it properly
First up, that doesn't appear to be compilation from source but simply an installation from the distribution package. Second, is there any reason you're not using the latest version?
To answer your actual question, I suspect that the problem is that /usr/local/bin isn't in your path. Try running it with the full path statement, i.e.:
[root@j3-aib-lab1-01 src]# /usr/local/bin/vmd
If that runs, then you'll have to either amend your path, or edit the configure file to put the executable in a directory that IS in your path.
