We are trying to understand the sharp compositional gradients at a glass/ crystal interface. It does not seems to be solely a diffusion spatial profile. Are there other considerations/ models we should consider as well? We know from detailed microprobe that the interfacial region is very different compositionally than both the dendritically growing crystal and the glass far from the interface.
The crystallization in non-isochemical glass systems is one topic considered a long time in our group. Especially in the case of nano crystallization the self-organized growth due to the depletion of crystal components in the vicinity of the crystals leads to an increase of viscosity and hence a diffusion barrier is formed hindering further crystal growth. Additionally in corporation with Prof. Isak Avramov we tried to develop models considering the changes in the glass network, i.e. relaxation times and the formation of floppy regions, and their influence on crystal size distribution.
