If I take images from a public domain (e.g., Wikipedia) and I want to use them in my PhD thesis, how do I properly cite them? I tried googling this, but could not find any useful suggestion.
Please give examples for both in-text citation (i.e., in the figure legend) and in the References section (i.e., at the end of the chapter). I plan to use the APA (5th edition) style. Thank you for your time and suggestions.

Thanks for your answer. I am well aware of the various licenses for images from Wikipedia. However, my question is specifically about those that fall under "public domain" license (such as the one which appears in the link below). I mean, I can try to draw it myself, but the quality will be far from this good. I do understand that anything which falls under "public domain" license can be used freely. However, without proper citation, people may get the wrong impression that I draw the picture myself (which is not my intention). And I feel that I should credit the creator of the file.
As for the citation style, it is dictated by the Graduate Thesis Manual of my university (which allows only two citation styles -- APA (5th ed) and Vancouver.
