Hi, I hope this might be helpful somehow.

Have you implemented the circuit for CAN conversion from your PIC18 MCU (RS-232) already? If not I'd suggest to review this website, you will need basically a CAN converter like the MCP2551 and the CAN library for PIC18:

Once you have done that, you should be able to connect to the PV380 display, which according to the operation manual, it does broadcast on proprietary messaging by accessing the 16-bit address (PGN)

Do you have PowerVision by the way? Are you trying to read or write info?

Another thing that I also thought about...

Since your PV380 is pre-programmed, maybe it will not recognize any write request because the display might work only with analog/digital inputs, but if the original sensors were working through CAN/RS-485, and since you do not know the commands they are sending to the master, you could "read" the information they are "actually" sending to the master with another device (say another MCU), understand the protocol and emmulate it with your new slave when sending through the same bus to the master...

If there is no datasheet for the master, you will have to do some reverse engineering to find out what register addresses and values get written to the slave when you do various actions using the PV380. I recommend using the PIC to convert the CAN input to an RS232 serial output in ASCII format which you then link to a PC running hyperterminal (or equivalent).

Then, when you press buttons on the PV380 you will see on the PC what the contents of the MODBUS packets are. (All MODBUS does is allow you to read and write a selection of register address on a slave device, but don't forget to respond to bus requests with a correctly formed acknowledgement packet before the timeout.)

This will allow you to document all the MODBUS features of everything the PV380 does.

Having done this and written the 'datasheet' for the PV380, the second stage is to then develop your PIC slave unit to respond appropriately to those MODBUS instructions according to how you want it to behave.
