The large USA NEON project is nearly complete in its current concept and construction. The NEON sites are carefully arrayed across the continent, based on climate, geology, biology, and land use. However, no sampling or sensing of gas, solution, or solids has been initiated deeper than 2 meters, even though the autotrophic system greatly affects the fundamental biogeochemistry of the belowground ecosystem often for many meters below the arbitrary 2-m cutoff. If gas, solution, and solid sensors were emplaced and samples taken, NEON could grow into a fully whole-ecosystem or critical-zone ecosystem science!!
