We have been using many traditional machine tools such as lathe machine, drilling machine, shaper machine, etc. in our machine shops. These machines are standalone without any integration with any central computer system or integration with each other. However if we can integrate them with a computer system that will continuously monitor the performance/utilization, maintenance related issues, and help in scheduling them, we will get the massive benefit of advanced machine tools with least investment. So what are the ways we can make these machine a little bit intelligent (?) that will help us in our traditional machine shop? Can IoT/similar technology help us in this case?
I believe what you are looking for is a Computer numerical control machine. This has a pre-defined task at hand and can be the basis of more intelligent machines.
The Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machines, were quite revolutionary in early 80's. Whilst in UK, I studies CNC, AutoCAD and Programmable Logic Controllers PLCs) in the Computer Aided Engineering program at Brighton College of Technology in 1989. Soon after, while pursuing a MSc in Information Systems, I wrote my MSc Dissertation on Computer Integrated Manufacturing for the Year 2000. Since then, technology have moved forward rapidly and today the INDUSTRY4.0 has become a common standard. Yet again, we are at the very new beginning of Next Generation of Future Fully Automated Manufacturing, which is quite beyond what I could possibly image today.

I think that the technology developed rapidly, and we can make anything intelligent by using microcontrollers. So, the idea of developing these microcontrollers can make your idea easy to implement.
