The data collection of students behaviors during the course activities can enrich the set of data that can be used to improve the authentication process during the exams or the students' evaluation using an e-learning platform. The set of question can be given in order to have the response by the students can give the platform the ability to authenticate the student during a distance exam or evaluation.
Hi! Surely behaviour can be measured when using digital tools and environments, and these can be used to authenticate students to know who is who. One basic example is measuring keystroke patterns when a student is writing on a keyboard, possibly in combination with random laptop camera photos. (But nothing will guarantee that he/she dies not cheat in another way, by having a knowledgeable friend present to talk with, etc. Isn't it better we try to use ICTs to avoid too much high-stakes testing?
Learning analytics data collection algorithms have better uses than only telling who is who; to make the student him-herself aware of his study patterns, knowledge gaps and relation to the study group to which he or she belongs - and voluntarily share personal data with the teacher and the system to get more taylored support and feedback and adapted material to work with towards learning objectives, what we today call adaptive learning, or sometimes personalized learning. When this is a future works well, we perhaps do not need much of high-stakes testing - identification and a credible learning curve when working will be assessment enough in many cases.
In my on-line classes I have found that the extensive usage of essays helps considerably. The student has to exhibit critical thinking to answer the question. Since it is a timed exam with forced completion (they cannot close it without it automatically submitting) they either know the material or they do not. They can refer to the text if they like. There is not enough time in the exam to allow them to make up for not having read the text as they attempt to complete the essays. I also use other types of question, of course. But essays keep the students honest.
In my point of view case study based questions also can help in this context. Besides if the tasks that involved much critical thinking would automatically absorb the students allocated time for the exam. Questions which are not predefined can help the students to occupy their thinking process genuinely during the e-exams and e-learning platform.
