According to PISA international rankings, Colombian students as well as students from several other Latin American countries are struggling readers. How can we use researchgate science materials to help them out of this mess brought about by many factors? Indeed, this applies to other countries in the world whose educational systems have been plummeting steadily.

Pisa tests was taken by 15 year olds in maths, reading and science. I don't think that Research gate provide materials for reading comprehension but information about what other researchers do or conversation on research issues. Not all of the researchers provide full articles. I think Google scholar is a good search engine for articles of student's interest. Don't panic by Pisa results. According to BBC news "the OECD says, there are often bigger differences within countries than between countries...South Korea might be at the top end of the performance tables, but it's at the very bottom in how happy pupils are in school. Punishingly long hours of study, high pressure tests and extra lessons out of school might deliver high results. But is that the system to pursue?"
For 15 year olds, popular science magazines on the Web are a better source for firing enthusiasm. Discovery News, Scientific American, New Scientist, National Geographic, Phys.Org, Popular Science, Popular Mechanics...
I agree with all your input. Yet, I believe that Researchgate materials such as some opinions, a number of research articles, questions, etc., could be used to enhance struggling students critical thinking skills. I know we can make them suffer a little bit, but challenging them would not hurt them.
Teaching a person to read critically could give them better academic chances in life.
Please remember that a number of struggling students do not have access to internet, the National Geographic magazine, and what have you.
In regards to PISA, I don't think we need to have kids who are obsessed with reading at the expense of their familiy lives. Yet, I don't think we want them doing video games, dancing and prancing everyday at the expense of their future. I think we should look for a balanced result.
I am still waiting for answers in regards on how we can use Researchgate as a means to help struggling students in the industrial world and in the third world.
My experience in the United States tells me that U.S. universities don't have a clue on how to face the PISA challenge on their schools. Also, the Colombian Ministriy of Education and Colombian universities are buffudled, and know much less than American universities on what to do about the situation. Indeed, how can we researchers help solve the problem using Researchgate materials?
