I have PLA blended with some process aids. I want to understand the stability of my blend with respect to temperature. Which is why I am thinking I will go for temperature Sweep. But I don't really understand how to make sense of the data in this context.
Edit 1: I understand that as stiffness decreases it means that compound would be a lot more easier to process. But I am specifically looking for any anomalous behavior which can point out a miscible blend from another immiscible blend.
In the temperature sweep test, the loading rate and frequency are kept constant throughout the range of testing temperature. this can be performed temperature sweep tests to obtain the set points (the temperature at which storage modulus, G′ = loss modulus, G″) of emulsified asphalt binders.
Rohit Kumar Thanks for the reply. But I understand the basic principle of it. I want to knowhow you'd point out if two polymers which where blended or a polymer and a plasticizer if they are compatible.
If you run the temperature sweep tests under nitrogen atmosphere, you can obtain the decomposition temperature of your samples by observing the storage modulus value. Storage modulus values will eventually be getting lower due to the chain scission in your samples. If your processing aids are more volatile than the resin, first you will see increased storage modulus and then decreased storage modulus at elevated temperatures.
If you run the temperature sweep tests under air, you can obtain the degradation temperature of your samples by observing the storage modulus value. Storage modulus values will eventually be getting higher due to the oxidation in your samples.
If your goal is to see whether blends are compatibilized or not, better run DSC or DMA to observe melting peaks and Tg peaks.
