Abrasive jet uses water as an accelerating medium where as micro blasting uses air.
jet shows the use of fluid (liquid) and is specific and focus to certain area of application while blasting shows the use of fluid but air or gas only and in this process area of application as compared to jet is larger..even full surface in some cases..
Abrasive Jet Micro Machining or Abrasive Air Jet Machining or Micro AJM are the same in essence. Large part of development of this approach was made (1995 - 2005) for the needs of semiconductors and in that industry it was referred as powder-blasting. For the past 10 years a new term: "micro-blasting" appears in literature.
We recently reviewed all the abrasive jet approaches and all the difference between the mentioned technologies seems to be in their titles. One may argue that micro-AJM operates with abrasive particles only, while micro-blasting can use spherical beads. However this argument is vague, since micro-blasting with spheres is logical to determine as "micro-shot-peening".
They have same performance level in industry. Both of them used as a blasting process. Differences in term of materials one jet is good for machining and one use powder for blasting.
